My First Lambs!!

This week the very first lambs hit the ground on Ewe Know It Farms! We had a difficult start, we lost a couple lambs that were just born too early, but now we finally have some lambs thriving and looking better every day.

From all that I have seen and heard about sheep lambing season, those early losses are common. It seems the beginning and the end of lambing season are always the hardest si that is what I am holding on to. It reallllly sucked to lose lambs right at the beginning. For the ones who came out alive, we tried to save them every way I knew how.

But it isn’t all bad! Like I said we do finally have some lambs thriving in lambing pens now with their mamas. The sheep that are lambing now are three year olds that I bought already bred from cousin. This means two things to me:

1. The ewes are having no trouble getting the lambs out and they are taking good care of them to get them up and moving.

2. I won’t be keeping any of these lambs for future breeding ewes or breeding rams to sell because I just don’t know their genetics. I had a set of triplets that is obviously mixed with some kind of hair sheep and quite a few with black and brown freckling and spots. There are definitely a few little ram lambs so far that look beautiful, super wide bodied and deep as well, but I don’t know exactly what these sheep are mixed with so I won’t sell them as breeding animals.

Soon the barn will be full of these little cuties bouncing around and in about a month I will have lambs from the ewes that I bred myself this summer!
